Face Mask

What It does

Face masks can reduce the spread of the Coronavirus or other respiratory viruses when worn by an infected person. Since infected people do not always have symptoms, many experts are recommending wearing a cloth face mask whenever you’re out in public until the COVID-19 pandemic is over. Using a cloth mask saves valuable surgical masks for healthcare workers. Health workers are even using cloth masks over top of the N95 surgical masks to extend their life.

Even if you can’t sew or don’t own a sewing machine, you can still protect yourself and your family. Here are links to easy-to-follow videos for several face mask designs. The best materials will be soft yet provide filtering. Good options are cotton layers (higher thread count is better), or cotton layered with chiffon or polyester. Use materials like quilting fabrics, pillow cases or sheets, knit fabric for clothes, or old clothes. Some mask designs allow for an additional filter added between the layers.

Masks should be tight fitting and fully cover the nose and mouth. You can add a wire strip (pipe cleaner, small gauge wire, or coffee bag ties are good materials) to the bridge of the nose for a better fit.

In addition to fabric, other materials you will need are:
- Ties or material to make ties. 1/4-inch or 1/8-inch elastic works great and comes in spools. You can also use ribbon, ribbon elastic, or lengths of knit fabric.
- A loop turner, bobkin, safety pin, or other hook or loop shape to pull the tie through the mask.
- Scissors, thread, needles, pins, an iron, and a sewing machine (optional).
